Secretary-General of the United Nations Mr. Ban Ki-moon concluded his visit to Mozambique

Maputo - 22 May 2013 - Today, the Secretary-General of the United Nations Mr. Ban Ki-moon concluded his visit to Mozambique, which included a meeting with Mozambican President Armando Guebuza. They discussed a wide range of topics, including developments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Madagascar, as well as in Mozambique. The Secretary-General praised the President and the country for the progress made over the past 20 years. The Secretary-General said that the clashes in the eastern DRC show how urgent it was to implement the framework agreement for the DRC and Great Lakes region.

New plan to address pneumonia and diarrhoea could save 2 million children a year

GENEVA/WASHINGTON, 12 April 2013 – A new Global Action Plan launched today by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) has the potential to save up to 2 million children every year from deaths caused by pneumonia and diarrhoea, some of the leading killers of children under five globally.

Mozambique: UN expert on extreme poverty to assess challenges in poverty alleviation

GENEVA, 5 April 2013 – United Nations Special Rapporteur Magdalena Sepúlveda will undertake an official visit to Mozambique from 8 to 16 April 2013 to gather first-hand information on the human rights situation of people living in poverty. She will assess the country’s efforts to protect their rights, official poverty reduction measures, and the obstacles faced both at the national and international levels.

Maputo, 12 February 2013 – The Humanitarian Country Team in Mozambique composed of United Nations and non-governmental organisations, have jointly issued a proposal of US$ 30.6 million to assist the affected population after severe flooding of the Limpopo River.

United Nations Statement on Flooding in Mozambique

The United Nations in Mozambique is responding to the needs of those affected by the flooding in recent days of the Limpopo basin in the province of Gaza, and is in full engagement with the Government of Mozambique, NGOs and other partners in responding to the arising humanitarian needs. A total of 26 persons have died in Gaza alone, with the nationwide death toll at 36.
